A little light goes a long way
More than two thousand years ago, a small band of Maccabees stood up to a powerful empire that sought to silence the Jewish way of life. Against all odds, they prevailed and returned to rededicate the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. They found only one jar of pure oil, enough for a single day. Miraculously, it burned for eight.
Every night of Chanukah we relive that miracle, reminding ourselves that no darkness can stand up to even a single flame.

Light before Shabbat candles
Candle-lighting times vary by location. Check the times for Newton, MA before you light.
How to light
Three simple steps
1
Set the candles
Place one candle in the menorah on the first night, adding one more each night, from right to left. The shamash (helper candle) sits apart or higher.
2
Say the blessings
Light the shamash, then use it to kindle the other candles, newest first from left to right, while reciting the blessings.
3
Share the light
Place the menorah in a window or doorway so the miracle is visible to all, and let the candles burn for at least half an hour.
